hey when capturing a wild rat the other day I got bitten... What are the odds of getting rabies from that? As a precautionary measure I poured Crown Royal in my wound and then sucked it out like a good Junior Woodchuck. Unfortunately, the rat escaped before i could take it in to the Doctor's office for "tests", and I doubt I would have brought it in anyway.(them bastards would chop it up!)
Perhaps this will teach me to stop using wild animals as a form a reflex training....lol.
The rat did not in ANY way act strange, so it wasn't mentally messed up or anything, and it wasn't foaming at the mouth or any of the "cartoon" symptoms.
I have also heard a rumor about "rat bite fever", but that one's not fatal so I don't worry too much about it.
ps.... I have had pet Rats (wild and lab) for 25 years so I would know if they acted "different"

Well, you should get it checked out if you start getting fevers and a itchy rash, but that's just common sense.
But no, although "rat-bite fever" does exist, you're probably a normal healthy individual; no recent chemotherapy right?

Rodents are actually seldom infected with rabies; it's the cat, farm animals and other carnivores that are usually rabies hosts.

But just to motivate your concern: yes, it is a painful death and no, once you develop symptoms, you are unlikely to survive. Any signs of hyperactivity or paralysis, start counting down...and coma and respiratory failure awaits.

So, see your local hospital for some anti-rabies immunoglobulin and also get some anti-tetanus cover.

Hmmm I'm afraid if anything drinkable gets to be poured over your wound, it'll have to be vodka...

By the way, you shouldn't ever suck out wounds with the mouth. 2 main reasons, not counting it might taste bad: firstly everyone's mouth is filthy in terms of germs (duh), only marginally better than the other end.
Secondly, you might have had some gingivitis or dental caries that allows the virus or whatever bug to enter your bloodstream that much faster.

Rats are fun to dissect, until you hit the massive uterus with several little embryos inside; the weirdest is snails (they are so messed up inside), closely followed by the grandpa of a colleague.
