Hi all. I just got done with a few good fights with Kenshin, who didn't seem to appreciate my fighting style ;-)

After I got him to cool off and stop insulting me about "learning a style" (despite the fact that I was doing fairly well, but then, I have a better ping than most; this makes me feel guilty sometimes), he helped me out a bit, which I appreciated, but I couldn't figure something out. I've noticed a lot of people doing a "hop" to the left or right, but could never figure out how to do it (I've been trying for months). He explained that it involves repeatedly pressing the left or right key very rapidly, but this led to nothing useful. I'm wondering, maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm using Rune Linux? I don't have a copy of Rune Windows available, so I can't really test. Is this something that only works on LCC, or does it work on other servers and the single-player campaign?

He also complained about the fact that I jump a lot, which I've recently learned helps me out (maybe as an alternative to the hopping style). I don't use jump-spin, as I've found that often leaves me way too wide open, but jumping at various specific points in a combo, and in various directions based on the orientation of the opponent, has helped me out. Is there something bad about doing this (he seemed to think so)?

I'll admit that the insult was successful in lowing my morale; I had spent a lot of time recently on improving my style, and according to my standings in the fights I've been participating, it's obvious that I've improved a lot since I came to LCC (which was shortly after I came to Rune). The last thing I want is to be considered a "lame newb" who can't learn to fight. So, I humbly ask for advice.

In options go to game and turn on dodging.

This took me a while to learn, too. The "Hopping" thing, go to your main menu in Rune, CONTROLS, and then GAME, and at the top, underneath the Gore Level, there is a thing called "Dodging", click the checkbox beside it, and there ya go!
Just double click, or press your key that moves either forwards, backwards, left, or right, twice fast, and that is the little "hop" thing!!

I personally think that, even if you are new, are pretty skilled. You can kill me, I can kill you. You can swing a weapon, and are learning techniques, which is great. My own fighting style with my Roman Sword (besides throwing it)came to me only last week ( I mean, I played for a year, took a break, and here I am again... I've been playing for a while now!). You'll find that you learn new things when you play, that will be better than your current technique, and just stick to the one you like the most, and works for you.

The "sideways hop" you are talking about is the dodge; you enable this from the game menu, under options - game - dodge checkbox. After you've checked that, the doubletap of the keys should make you leap in that direction (you can also go forward or back, as well as to the sides). It takes a couple games to get used to it, but it's very helpful.

Your jumping style probably annoys people because it's a tactic mainly used in high-cal servers; while it is actually fairly easy to dodge and defend against, many people prefer an opponent who stands and faces them, rather then take flight or back away while fighting.

My style varies; anything from "stoner style" to a "blender motion", in which I use the shorty combos to repeatedly slash my opponent while either dodging to the side or spiraling around them. My style probably annoys some people, but hey, it works... though it is fairly easy to defeat once people figure me out. It's always best to learn several styles or tactics, so you can adjust your fighting according to your opponent.

I say, keep fighting here; observe how other people fight, and learn from them, and any mistakes. But hey, it's a game; don't worry to hard if you can't beat some people, and have your fun. Sometimes it is more fun dying then winning.

I have more fun playing the fool then if I really concentrated and learned more about tactics, so that's the best I can tell ya!

My advice on a style:

Just find your own niche and develop it. If it's the jumping thing you like to do best, work on it. Do what's comfortable for you. Forcing yourself to do styles that don't feel right will only result in more deaths.

Interesting. This is a tactic I picked up while using solely low-cal weapons (LCC is the only server I've ever really played on).

Yep, I'll keep on fighting and learning. In fact (not to lay the "blame", or anything ;-), it was Unter who inspired me to be a little more free with jumping, and it has certainly helped me, as I said. Otherwise, I have learned a lot from everyone on LCC, including you, YellowHair. I appreciate it.

I think I'll not worry about it when people insult me for my fighting style; Fighting fair is the only thing that's important, and they can learn to counter my techniques as I am learning to counter theirs.

Right you are. I've had so many people, telling me how much I sucked at Rune, which was one of the reasons I quit in the first place. I rejoined becuase I was bored, and was not suprised to find that one of my favourites: Dark Sandmichs' Arena, had vanished; and I looked around for games that used the 1 on 1 Arena. I eventually heard about Low Caliber, and came here. Then, I joined, and becaem a peregrine, and now here I am.

It's like that saying: It's not weither you win or Lose, it's how you play the Game.

Just finished a couple of games in the arena (1 on 1 as well as FFA). Great fun! GGs to all who played. I'm still extremely awkward with Dodge, but it can be really handy.

People will often dodge the moment they land, with or without the jump spin attack. puts a bit of 'trickiness' into the melee.

Well, if you're getting low morale from being told 'OMFG!!!1!! U R LAME!!1!!', you really should just jump-spin to lower that person's morale...LOL. (or just hit that 'LOL' repeatedly)

This isn't a wine club, and I'm surprised no-one has told those cheesy types to "suck it up or go grow some tits!"

Don't listen to anything Kenshin has to say about fighting styles lol. He has the most annoying fighting style I've ever encountered, and he's certainly not one to talk about jumping too much

Of course, I don't care about the random idiots who flame on these games; I would be a lot more concerned if an LCC member told me these things.

Haha, well, yes; I see no intrinsic quality in being a member of anything, however, I have noticed that most LCC members are reasonable people. Since members must accept new members, it's a sane assumption that LCC members I meet will be *somewhat* reasonable. :-)

Dude ignore kenshin, he molests frogs. Fight any way you want to fight as long as it doesn't involve running or laming in any other way. The way i fight now is just an exageration of my noob days of fighting combined with some neat tricks i have acquired along the way.
I still haven't gotten the oppurtunity to game with ya yet so i look forward to it, perhaps we could exchange some "neat tricks".

My advice on fighting style is this: NEVER commit yerself to one style. If ya do someone who is "variable" will walk all over you. I myself seem to have no style other than "standing stoner". I usually stand there, take a hit to let me know I'm in combat, then I attack like a tomato vs. a bad comedian!!!
Every fight will be different, as this game has an incredible ammount of combos available.
Not just combos available to "you", but the combos made from fighting combos with combos!!!

ps.... my "style" seems to net me a lot of deaths hehe

That's just it, Radix. He was. Do note the past tense there, heh heh. Just don't take him seriously. He's not really that bad of a fellow, but he tends to run his mouth, as do most of us, but more than most.

As for fighting style, I must disagree with most of those here. Jumpers, and jumpswingers in particular, get on my nerves personally. But, more than that, it's more of a "poor sport" style. In fact, almost all of the jumpswingers I have met are not only irritating to fight with, but are also assholes to everyone. While I'm not recommending that you never jump, I do recommend refining a more friendly, down-to-earth style (pause for laughter). Even if those of us who dislike jumpswingers are able to be considered "intolerant," you'll find that a lot of the nicest people are numbered among us (don't look at me, though). If you blow off people who don't like jumpswingers, then you blow off a large number of people who you'd probably like otherwise. I can't think of any right now, but I started a poll a while ago and it turned out that nearly a majority of Low Caliber Club members dislike jumpswingers.

But then, I'm the cranky guy who wants to ban everything, you'll remember. So, take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. Remember, I run off at the mouth, too. Anyway, I haven't noticed anything in your particular fighting style that annoyed me; if you are indeed a jumpswinger, you do so politely enough to not catch my notice. As I said, most jumpswingers are also assholes, and it's probably a combination of the two that get to me.

everyone has thier own style radix, ppl give me shit on how i fight, i dont care really they just seem unable to accept a different way of fighting.
thats fine with me too, just means they need to play the game more.
