Interesting article on the Greco-pagan roots of Easter, which predate the Christian by about a millenium; itself penned by a Christian.

Hmm, isn't that true of a lot of Christian holidays? Yuletide, for example. ;-)

That may well have been the general idea, and it highlights a Christian dependency upon its mythological heritage (the authors were Greek-speaking Jews):

• Satyrs recycled as dæmons (hornèd trouble-makers);
• Alceme in the immaculate conception (Zeus impregnates Amphitryon's wife with Hercules).

I consider the Greek forbears more convincing than their Christian abstraction, however, their model more tenable for life.

what is even more interesting is that the greek institution derives from the neolithic goddess worship. in their attempt to replace the femenine goddess and traditions they forever froze it's symbols in time.

apolo's double snake for example now the universal symbol for medicine is first attributed to him after the slaying of pythos, a huge snake, which in turn is the symbol of the goddess. ironically the symbol lived on.

pentagram, another symbol of the femenine, also lived on. however demonized it has become, it was the symbol for venus, the rose, or the vagina.

the symbol is thought to have originated from the first astrologists who observed the periodic patterns of planets. They found that every 8 years venus draws out a pentagram in the sky.
