Unter den UebrigenIt's a fascinating example that the Rune community really can police itself; we can extend the philosophy of self-governance to the new "animation cheats" and see what happens.

What, like Smith's invisible hand theory?
Sun February 02 2003, 03:28 PM
Unter den UebrigenFascinating, Mis. If you're referring for instance to Book IV Chapter II of
the Wealth of Nations:
"By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends it."
then both 'no' and 'yes'. 'No' insofar, I'm afraid, as votekickers make a show of intending the common good (for there they err); 'yes' if, in self-interestedly kicking those players of whom they're jealous, they accidently affect the common good. And it is always the good player who knows best how to cheat.
Plato once remarked that the more skillful a doctor is, the more adeptly he could poison you. Paradoxically, it's the best players who deserve most to be kicked.

SHADYadam smith and his "self interest" can suck my dick.

Well, you have point, but if you can kill the "bug", why just not kill it then. But, this police thing can go over the top you know. There is already some talk about a blacklist for people who flame (like flame nazi shit) and people who crash servers. I just hope things like this wouldn't be nessasery.......
Sun February 02 2003, 06:50 PM
Unter den UebrigenHmmm, very true man. I had in mind something more modest than a blacklist, though:
power over the present game.

Manowari'm very impressed to see adam smith being discussed on the board. am i allowed to discuss malthus, veblen and of course keynes now?
Sun February 02 2003, 08:24 PM
Unter den UebrigenDudes; that's what we've been waiting for. A little bit of that market genius.

ImpalerKeynes is the man, tho...Marx came with some interesting shit too.

Unter den UebrigenLol; that was a dirty little secret I knew would get out some time. Trick is, of course, you have to give up your frags to do it. But if somebody needs to be kicked, "gotta do what you gotta do".
Mon February 03 2003, 11:31 AM
Manowarfigured it out quite some time ago... never used it till now. i figured it's better than telling people we dont know how to votekick. a few weeks back some damn sarks votekicked me for kicking their ass. so i dont care to tell people how to do it
Mon February 03 2003, 11:41 AM
Unter den UebrigenHmmm; well here's something interesting. With the new stats package I'm thinking about having Rune look up your profile when you join in, mainly so it can display your ranking; but theoretically it could be used to check your name against a database of members.
Should we perhaps limit the votekick to members? In Rome, for instance, only citizens could vote.
Mon February 03 2003, 01:52 PM
Lord WintermoonI just remember, that to kick often, means to lose players alot! But at least there are as many lamers as you need votekicks ...

Absolutely! But this could lead to a intense cloning proces (if it gets out): there'll be lots of 'members names' on the server.
I hope i'm wrong (never happened before

)

Unter den UebrigenInteresting, Imp. There's a little known variable in
..\system\user.ini called "ngWorldSecret"; we'll instruct the members to pick a password so an imposter with the same name won't overwrite your stats or pose as a member.
