My financial situation is limited right now, but as soon as I get a job, I can use Alienware's financing options to pay as little as 46$ a month. Good idea? Bad idea? What do you guys think?

I could build the same system, or better, for <= $700. Of course, then you don't get the cheesy plexiglass window that way.

why shouldn't he get an athlon? in my opinion athlon ist much better than pentium.

PS: don't get the nvidia geforce! radeon 9800 pro is better!

I've always preferred the Pentium's stability over the slightly increased performance of an Athlon.

But before everyone decides to try to "convert" me to Athlon, think of this: Would you Athlon users want someone to shove a Pentium down your throat? They're both great chips, but people have their preferences. Comparable to Ford vs Chevy, Macs vs PC's, et cetera.

I think the idea here was affordability, thus an Athlon would be the more economical choice, though not as dependable or stable. Hell, you can take the heatsink off a Pentium without it burning up, can't say that for an Athlon, but going with AMD will save you a good $70+.

well here's the real question, when I get a job, money is no object. I already have a car, and I have 2 years of highschool to save money for college. Not to mention my parents will probably pay for some of it. Getting an Alienware pc would require muuuuuch less effort. And it also looks so sweet. So money = no problem, and alienware = no effort. Does this change anything?

Heh, if you enjoy being ripped off, go for it man. Alienware builds quality PCs for gamers and overclockers, they just happen to overcharge a huge amount. Paying laptop prices for a desktop isn't what I'd consider to be a great idea, but to each his own.

Do your own case modding!! It is awesome. Get some cathode lights, glass window, stenciled aluminum cutouts, neon paint and rounded IDE cables. Mod that shit out. I have. Just getting a stencil ready. I am not adding any lights till I know my system can handle the power use. Decals is another thing. Just buy all of your shit seperate and put it together then buy a nice case that isn't made out of crap and mod that shit.

yup, they do look tres coo (fister)

and having used an athlon (still, actually) and an audigy (no more), i'd say athlons are really power hungry and if you plan to mod the case too, be careful...you'd need a very good enermax 450W pack at least...plus that vid card aint anorexic...!o!
and as for audigy, i really couldnt persevere with it...hope you know how difficult they can be for certain games and stuff...

and honestly, for that price i thought the 80G h-drive is a bit stingy...(i have that barracuda myself and i like very much, thought the withstand pressure up to ocean depths seems real marketing gimmick)...
