Set this up, go into options, select a master server from the drop-down list (some don't work) and then go into the channels folder.

Where it says "enter the name of the channel to join", enter Low Caliber Club or whatever starting with # in the front.

And there you go, simpler than taking a piss without wetting the seat

I've also recently come across a JavaScript IRC client called "jIRC"; do you have any preferences?

Well I use mirc for more than 5 years now or so. Dont know about the Java clone.

jIRC is attractive is because it's a Java applet; that means we can integrate it directly with the site: one click would put you on a channel with the username you logged in with.

Still a little murky on the server aspect, though: how we get and maintain a channel, or if and where a dedicated server of our own could be rigged up.  Misanthrope mentioned something about a box of his awhile back, and it would be nice to have some good, reliable space.

Never used jIRC, but that seems like a great idea. Would simplify trying to get to the server.

Anyone who leaves their comp on all the time 24/7 would make a good host. It doesn't take much bandwidth, unless you're planning some file transfer.

True; but I wouldn't mind finding a shared host we could put under irc.lowcaliber.com.  I've got a couple candidates; let's see what turns up.

For some reason there seems to have been an inordinate amount of credit card fraud amongst IRCd hosts, and some have even stopped taking new customers.  Strange; sounds like something out of the 1980's phreak scene.

how much bandwith we talking? if it's just a chat program is the bandwith something similar to ICQ and AIM or more? My computer is on 24/7 (except for roughly one reboot a day) and i'm the only person who uses it, so there'd be no worries of anyone else monkeying around.

With the irc channel, we could mabye broadcast the duells in the channel Im also thinking about a demoarchive for the toruneys and so on.

I've enquired by a shell provider in Ontario, and it looks like we'll have our own IRCd up shortly, probably under the subdomain "irc.lowcaliber.com".  There we can set up various channels of interest and see if it's a meaningful compliment to the boards.  I'll also try to integrate a java client with the forum page so you can sign in based on the username you're already logged in with.

Part of the reason it's attractive is because they're offering simultaneous MySQL access, which means we can move LowCal stats to their own domain, "stats.lowcaliber.com"; and preserve these resources for the board alone (which should have exclusive priority).

Well the thing is, that if you use the quakenet, you will get to more visitors, because there the most clans and gamers are hanging around. I know that's not maybe for our interest, but I wanna point at this fact, to be sure, we understand, what possibilities we have. But an own channel and network would be great too

More visitors are not interesting per se; and with IRC, as I understand, you have the ability to link to additional outside networks.  DALNet, for instance, seems to be a collection of disparate servers linked together.

With an established base we have the option of expanding later.  If we set up a channel on QuakeNet, someone has to vigilantly maintain it with Eggdrops and Bots.
