Lol, dude; I'm still thinking it's the punctuation in the name.  When the IRC applet comes up, hit “config”, change your nick and reconnect.

It should work.  Alternatively, you could alter your username on the site; but not if you only use IRC occasionally.

You could also take Radix's advice.

I don't remember how Trillian works for setting up new IRC connections, but there should be a way to specify the server: that'll be irc.quakenet.org. The channel you then want to join is #lowcaliber.
