I'd like to write up a little applet for the Gnome panel to tell me when people are playing. Is there a (simple) way to query the server for that kind of information? HTTP/XMLRPC interface or something? barring that, is the protocol that Rune itself uses to query said information documented in any way?

... Reason being, I just missed Unter *twice*: I saw his depart from LCA, refreshed, and there was his depart from the second server. :-P

You might want to check out Rune Server Query by Critter first?

We kept it simple, radix; an http request with basic authenitcation will get you a nice synopsis. Should I send you the details by email; and why aren't you a minor yet?

Sure, email is fine. My address is in my profile, I think. Please mention how often a request to this service is appropriate, since I'm going to have to poll it to implement this. Unter, about Minorship, I expect I don't have it because I haven't been around very much; I was having problems with my OpenGL drivers for a while (a couple of months?) so I haven't really spent a ton of time in the arena with members/minors.

Ah, sorry for not replying Dante -- It doesn't seem the tool will be useful, for two reasons: it's for windows, and the source doesn't seem to be available, so I can't look at it to figure out the protocol :-( But thanks for the suggestion! :-)

Don't worry, radix! I know it might not suit your linux purposes, and meant it only as a suggestion... Good luck with your programming..

Haven't received any info yet. No rush, of course, I just don't want to be forgotten :-)

Radix, I have to head out of town for a few weeks on account of school. In the mean time, throw up an http request to: http://lowcaliber.com/030719b_activetable.js.phpwhich gives you your information in a slightly buried format (you'll have to parse a tad bit). That will integrate your requests with the ninety second cache already in place, and allow you some freedom in determining an appropriate request cycle. When I get back, we can deal with pinging the server directly; which involves some security issues.

Ahh, yes, I noticed that URL before; I was curious how those server status things worked so I rummaged through the source. 90 seconds is quite often enough, I think. Thanks!

First give this a read: IPServer Package for Unreal. Next, this should help better understand the actual network data packets: UT query code. Once you understand that, it should be relatively simple to develop a querying script and GUI using Perl and Curses. Later!
