It's from the Bible, in the book of (I think) Proverbs. And, although I'm not sure about this, I think that the translation is misleading, and that the Hebrew word that they translated into the English word "name" actually means "reputation." So, if I'm correct, the phrase actually means "A good reputation is rather to be chosen than great riches."
