OK, Mano, Woody, Middie and I are all trying to get into XFire. It is the messaging program for gamers, where it shows you your buddy's gaming status and Ventrilo status, etc. Like if I'm playing Battlefield 1942, you sign on XFire and you can see exactly where I am and just join me. It is a kick-ass program and I hope it'll be the replacement for MSN for a lot of us.

But here's the catch, they don't support Rune yet. So we ALL need to send them mail, requesting support for Rune, even if you're not interested it would help us out a lot.

Send all mail to newgames@xfire.com with the subject "Rune" and a short message, or just a message stating the game name. Your help is greatly appreciated (suck-up!!).

Awesome, Cheese , hopefully TeT joins, too. Do you guys play any other games online that XFire supports?? Supported game list is on their site, I linked it below this. You'll probably see us playing BF1942 most of the time, however I'll be seen playing tons of various ones as, well, I have too many games.

Oh and ULF! You got XFire, too! Awesome, now hopefully when you play Battlefield 1942 you'll run XFire 24/7 like us so we can see if you're playing or just chat or whatever. Glad to see a few of you interested, hopefully when Rune support comes out we'll get everyone using it (and when more people play BF1942 with us, all of you will hopefully be OK with using XFire and being on Ventrilo ).

WOOT! OK people, we've got a breakthrough, lol.

I doubt XFire would add Rune support to their program, so with my impatience I decided to try to add Rune support myself . And I think it works!!

Here's what I did:

Opened \XFire\ua_plugin.ini'.

Studied their format and how they seem to be working everything around.

Used some common sense and copied the Unreal Tournament information.

Changed the following values:
LongName
ShortName
Icon
LauncherDirKey
LauncherExe
ServerStatusType

Since they search for the games based on reg-key entries, I just went into regedit and took Rune's exact key that specifies the folder, then replaced UT's LauncherDirKey with Rune's.

Changed the LauncherExe to the proper 'System\Rune.exe'.

Changed long and short names.

ResHacked the Rune executable, took the icon, and placed it in '\Xfire\icons'.

Changed ServerStatusType from UT to UNKNOWN.

Decided not to modify anything else since it looks alright, especially since I just took the same information from Unreal.

And that's it! Easy for me, and as you can see in the screenshot below, it found it! In my next post I'll post the files you'll need.

OK Now here's the files that you'll need to get Rune to work with XFire.

Backup '\Program Files\XFire\ua_plugin.ini'.

Unzip my archive to '\Program files\XFire'.

Make sure 'ua_plugin.ini' is in the root folder, and 'rune.ico' is in the ICONS folder.

Run XFire, let it search for Installed Games again, and it'll find all instances of Rune.

In case of an XFire update, copy the text in 'XFire Rune Test.txt' and paste it onto
the bottom of your new 'ua_plugin.ini'. Remember to change that number on the top.
Look at the last game in that file and just make sure Rune's number comes right after
that one, (Like True Crime is 4242, so I made Rune 4243). Then just save. If a new
update of XFire comes with Rune support, then you don't have to worry about changing
this thing.

OK Got it?! Good, now download my file and trust me.

I am not 100% on whether this works perfectly or not, we may have to tweak it a little... I need some of you guys to help me test it out though, it'd be nice of you. If it does work, then WOOT, I did a good job .

OK I tested this with Mano... and I'm sorry to say that outside users can not view Rune status... but we can have stuff like "Up For Game: Rune". We're still requesting XFire support for Rune, but we need more help.

Yes yes, Mace did a great job of perfecting the modification. I noticed in the Quake 1 Game Request, someone posted the exact text to add Quake to XFire like it was nothing, heh... I guess we may be galvanizing it, but it is a great breakthrough because now XFire supports every game I want it to support !! And though I didn't really test the auto-join, I'm informed it works seamlessly. Yay for Rune being based on the Unreal Engine . How come I don't get a "you're awesome", Mano ? Teehee .
