It's very much in its initial stages; but we're one step closer to a refreshing "webcam" in the arena.  The gist is: you'll have a visual portal into the action which updates, say, every five minutes or so.

I really don't think thats necessary. A 5 minute update will not keep you up to date on the situation and anything more frequent will use up too much bandwidth.

Seems like time not well wasted putting all that work into it.

I haven't really sunk too much time into it yet; but I thought it would "flesh out" the overall picture of the server status we get from the web.  Another idea would be to take one shot of the large arena only when it's filled to capacity, so that the still would at least be pertinant.

It's a "back-burner" at this point; but you're right: a screen shot takes up a good 1Mb or so of space, and that is a shitload of bandwidth at peak times unless we could configure the webcam spectator to take 320x240 shots.  It's more an exercise in web integration than anything else.

It would be much more efficient to upload a jpeg, but since the engine only takes bitmap shots you would need a converter inbetween. If this were possible, the potential would be much greater.

Actually what might be more worth our time is the so-called uTV (or read the Barry's blurb).  Originally written for UT, it allows a live, real-time portal into the game without bogging down the game server (it diverts broadcast bandwidth to a separate, dedicated machine).

That way you can hop on and check out what's going on without getting sucked into a game, lol.

Interesting.
Setting the site as the only client can solve the "bandwidth problem".
If you can make it compatible with Rune's engine it should work. Thumbs Up
