Here's the .fla for a visual preloader. Open it up and look at the code. I made sure to include a lot of verbose comments to make it simple to understand.

Enjoy.

First, make a movie clip and name the instance whatever (for this example, I'll say button_mc).

In button_mc have a default frame (frame 1, for when it's doing nothing) and an action attached to it saying stop();

Then on frame 2, start the animation you want it to play when the mouse hovers over it. Let's say this animation is 5 frames long (so frames 2 - 6 are the animation). On frame 6 you want an action saying gotoAndPlay(2); so it endlessly loops or stop(); if you want it to animate to a certain point and stop.

Now, on frame 7 you start the mouse out animation. This can be whatever kind of animation you want, if you want something different from the reverse animation. Let's say this animation is, again, 5 frames long. This means frames 7 - 12 are designated to the mouse out animation. On frame 12 you want the action gotoAndStop(1);

Ok, so now that your movie clip is set up, you need to make a transparent button (by creating a new button then only putting something in the "Hit" key frame). We'll call it trans_button for this example. Click on trans_button and then open your actions panel. Here's what the actions for trans_button should look like:
on(rollOver) {
    button_mc.gotoAndPlay(2);
}
on(rollOut) {
    button_mc.gotoAndPlay(7);
}
on(release) {
    //whatever action you want
}

You may want to have some comment frames in button_mc to make it a little more readable.
ex: Comment frame 2 as "MouseOver" and frame 7 as "MouseOut", then the actions in trans_button could be
on(rollOver) {
    button_mc.gotoAndPlay("MouseOver");
}

Hope it helps Smile

hey minis i really appreciate all your help man, but for some reason i cant get it to work properly. i dont think i have made the tranparent button in the correct area, or i have put the actionscript in the wrong place. i have made the trans button and put it in the hit areaand opened the actions for that arean and pasted them in but it doesn seemt to be working, i think i may have something in the wrong area, do u have a souce file i could dload from somewhere so i can work it out from that as well as the instructions you have given me, sorry to be a pain about this, i just suck bad at actionscript.
