Eh, Masu, it's simple, throughout history men and women have been in a power struggle. Due to child birthing and rearing, women have rarely been in control of their culture’s valuable resources because pregnancy made it impossible for them to hunt and do other strenuous activities that men could do year round. Due to this lack of control of valuable, tradable resources; they became dependent on men, and thus undervalued in society. That's why non-trading hunter/gatherer tribes had a near equilibrium between men and women, though even in those cultures it was still weighted towards men since meat was valued higher than grains, vegetables, fruit, etc. Thus, in "modern" society, this archaic ideology has carried over and women continue to be undervalued. So men who stick to the traditional mindset use terminology such as "wives" to continue the belittlement of women in an effort to keep them as an underclass of sorts. Wife, in reference to an unmarried woman, to me, implies that she should be dependent on a man, i.e., that all wives need husbands or they're not of the norm, otherwise, a wife is merely a woman joined to a man in marriage. That’s not an exact history, just a brief description of my understanding of the situation. If I’m mistaken, maybe Unter of Mano will clarify?

"Alewife" eh? I know what an alewife is and I think you guys may appreciate it.
My family owns a summer home in a small town on Lake Michigan. In town there is also a small inland lake that is connected to Lake Michigan by a man-made channel.
The Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) is a small fish, about 4 to 6 inches in length that spend most of their life in the deeper, more open waters of Lake Michigan. They only come into small lakes and rivers to spawn. They must come into this little lake by the millions because for approximately two weeks there are countless alewife bodies on the shore rotting and stinking. During that time span, I'm glad that our house isn't on that lake, lol.
Which leads me to an interesting question? How is a fish named an Alewife?
