Hey, because you know about this stuff, I was wondering if you could help me out a bit.
I made this mock up of what my site may look like. I can do the design but I need help with the mechanics. I know how to do the rollover button things in flash but what I need to know how to do is make a drop down navigation menu as shown. ie click on the nav button and it will close, click it again and it will go back up in a nice smooth animation look. Also Im not sure how to incoperate the buttons I make into the menu like that... I can place them on a page alright, but I am not sure how to make them be in "one peice" of flash and still have their sepperate links.

Ok here is a tutorial I use. It is basic but just do the steps to each button to have multiple buttons with multiple menus. LOL!!!
Much easier to have something on hand like this instead of typing out the tutorial and plus you get images so hazaaa.

What you're going to want to do is have movie clips that contain the animations you want your buttons to do when different events take action, then have a transparent button that uses tellTarget-like commands.

For a drop-down nav menu, you generally want a movie clip (name it menu, for example) that shows the original button and its animations at the beginning - Let's say you label those frames "Idle", "MouseOver" and "MouseOut".
Then you want to have the animation for the menu popping up (Labelled "Expand" or something) and one for the menu closing again (Labelled "Deflate").
After you have all these animations, what you put in the actual menu is just a matter of making buttons and putting them in the movie clip.
Now, you want a totally transparent button over top of the original button that has the ActionScript

menu.gotoAndPlay("MouseOver");
}
on(mouseOut) {
menu.gotoAndPlay("MouseOut");
//at the end of "MouseOut", it directs
//the clip to "Idle"
}
on(release) {
toggle = !toggle;
if(toggle) menu.gotoAndPlay("Expand");
else menu.gotoAndPlay("Deflate");
}

Or something to that effect. Excuse my syntax if it's not entirely correct (been a while, heh).

Hehehe looks like quite a few people are interested in making web portfolios here in the club. Good good, I'd love to see all of your work.

Me, I just put whatever I want on there, doesn't matter how much it sucks (usually sucks anyway).... we'll see though, I'll be trying some prettier stuff in due time. Now, now I'm taking advantage of getting familiar with CSS & HMTL (not interested in Flash now), then I'll really get to work on el Photoshop and such, trying to spruce up my portfolio for now.

If you haven't seen it yet, then just go to pencil.qn.com, I haven't worked on it lately though, nor is there a 3rd section or 3rd gallery section for MISC. stuff, it'll come in due time, just don't feel up to filling it lately ...

Sidenote: Yes, yes this was coded by myself, no matter what you think or have seen, this idea when it started (a long time ago, just started really putting it to use now) was completely original, and my code was all done by myself... for this whole thing was a learning experience for me in general, not to impress people with false bullshit. By the way, it may have been self-coded, but Middie was a big help and fixed up my code for me (exported my CSS to an external style sheet and fixed some more stuff up , good guy, lol) .

Nice site there pencil, although my cursor looks like a diagonal resize on links, is it supposed to be like that?

Yes, yes the cursor is supposed to be like that... stylized cursors are pretty fun, hehe. Over links it is a SW-Resize cursor and over the images it is an SE-Resize cursor.

Furthermore, good good that it is for personal and business use, kind of like Manowar's site, except he hasn't put the personal part up yet . Whoo!

Snow Snow and more snow

One quick question for now, to make the menu transparent like shown in that one site there where it is a translucent thing and not completely clear, do you have to to that in flash I am guessing?
And just a FYI, I am going to try to do a mixed menu between the tutorial that midknight posted and yours mini. Mainly I don't like that tutorial because it requires hiding under something just as big and I don't think that would work with what I was planning.

Transparency is easily achieved by tweaking an object's alpha in its property menu. The beauty of Flash even lets you use motion tweens to create a fade out/in effect with the alpha property.
In ActionScript, the property is _alpha and its values range from 0 to 100 (percentage).

ex: You have a movieclip named clip_mc. To set clip_mc's transparency to 50%, you would use
clip_mc._alpha = 50;

I'm attaching the .fla for that demo I made so you can see how I did it...
