amen to that.
Because Im runnin at the 490000000000000 X 870000000000000. ya know what im sayin?

just kidding
I also have a 1280X1024 res. I think it would be best to design it around a 800X600 or 1024X768.
800X600 isn't as bad as you would think either.

Thanks I appreciate the comments all, and mid, we would welcome any help or input with this thing. I am a visionary, but I don't know yet if I have the technical chops to pull this site off to it correct potential.
So next steps?
I guess I will tweak some images and design aspects for efficency and base it around probly both a 1280X1024 and 800X600 design.
Sound good?

Problem being duders that standards are everything. 1024 x 768 is max and is only experimental at the moment. The standards are in the middle at the moment. Until the big players move to 1024 x 768 all web designs and layouts must fit 800 x 600. I have an elastic design that maxs out at 960 pixels in width. It is a fully customizable template with column positioning.

** Socks ** DREAMWEAVER IS BAD! If you want to be in the industry of multimedia and interactive design you must know the code. Dreamweaver blows goats. Only thing its good for is a quick format of pasted text and thats it.

Design and functionality is what you are looking for guys. Also eye pleasing. To much eye candy and you will disturb people.

Yeah, really. When I was in my class, half the people hadn't even heard of HTML, for instance. For some reason my teacher let them play Medal of Honour: Allied Assault.

Anyways, high schools don't teach you anything you want to learn, so it seems (related to computers, I mean). That's why I buy books to learn C, C++ and BASIC, because they don't teach it.

Heh, give Mid your teacher's email address. Talk some sence into her.

Rune players do always run at 800x600... the majority of my school used to run at that, but they typically run at 1024x768 ever since Windows XP came out and that's how "it came when they bought it".

I'm not going into this resolution bullshit but all I'm saying is DON'T FORMAT FOR A CERTAIN RESOLUTION. Notice how this site is? Believe it or not the sidebar goes all the way on the left of everyone's browser despite resolution and nothing is generally fixed (except Unter's IE hack which only affected users like me but obviously not anymore since InfoPop now works under Opera seamlessly). What's the sense in formatting so that it only takes up the middle of a screen. I'm not discussing weiners.

For anyone who hasn't been around in the last year, I run at 1920x1440. Merc, you do NOT have a big monitor, lold. This is the minimum res. I can run at, as well... and the next highest unless you want to do dualies (widescreen need not matter).

I'm not commenting on the layout... I honestly love the crappy layout we have. It is crappy looking, just like our wiki, and it looks awesome. Simple, fast-loading and it WORKS. The layout looks too photoshopped (well duh) and too 3D and too-exactly-what-Unter-didn't-intend-for-Low-Caliber to me.

I JUST WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW I AM STILL WORKING ON THIS DAMN SITE MYSELF, OK?! I am writing the sidebars and everything and I WILL be getting Ventrilo status on there. I don't want to hear anything about it and I am working on this project alone with the exception of emails to Unter that I may compose. You guys didn't know that, right? That I have to write all this PHP from scratch (with no experience but the editing of open-source SQuery) for this site? This is why I don't want a site revamp now and, hell, I would really prefer if you talked to Unter and asked what he'd like. We don't need the site to be fixed whatsoever, just need to get these sidebars out of the way and a CS Source stats page up (yes I am 99% capable of that, too). I just want people to know it and appreciate it because there's too many onlookers and not enough helpers.

TeTchro, my school that I paid $6,000+ a year for for two years to attend didn't teach anything more than Java. Then I transferred to a public highschool, and they teach C++ and Visual BASIC and full-on advanced HTML (which I don't need) and AutoCAD anddd well I did a lot of work in Photoshop 5 LE during CAD class so maybe they have a photomanipulation-related design class.

That server links isn't leaving, buddy. Please, it is bad enough I'm making these sidebars while you guys are considering dumping the whole thing and starting over with the flashy 3D blahblah site... let me at least finish this. I worked hard for those server stats and I wish for it to stay -- plus all the squery folder materials won't be moving otherwise we get no stats at all so pshh.

Overview of what I am working on:
  • Server sidebar stats (SQuery PHP block)
  • Ventrilo server stats (regular page and sidebar block)
  • Mani-Admin CS: Source statistics

If you don't appreciate the current work that is acting as a prerequisite for this premature revamp, here's a 'fuck you' and stay off of the BF1942 and Source servers that Mano and I worked our asses off to give you as well as the stats pages and other servers that have been placed.

(By the way, Mano... I'll do all the testing on the webspace you gave me to test on, a shame you don't have PHP working there.)

Pencil why are you even commenting if you aren't interested in seeing a different look. Its just a trial. Also you saying you aren't interested in Advanced HTML shows that you aren't in with the times and what are standards. Pencil this site is generated using PHP which also run with xml that you can manipulate the DOM and redesign the tags for basic HTML to fit your needs.

There is a general concensus that a 1024 x 768 is what we would conform to which in reality is 960 x whatever your length you need. You have to calculate the chrome of the operating system as well as the scrollbars.

The site loads quickly because it is being generated on the server with only a script(text based doc) brought to the client side. There are ways to do that nicely with Sockets layout.

By big players I am refering to cnn.com, microsoft.com and any other massivly hitting site out in web world. They are all 800 x 600.

Okay here. I personnally do not thyink it is fair to pencil that after all his hard work in the seres and squery and all of that other shit you just wanna dump it and make something new. I say we bring back the SQuery and maybe lessen the 3D because all the 3D shit and stuff doesnt reflect rune and all that type of stuff.

I do think a few trials should be in order. To test out a few idea's how they work, what peoples takes are on tehm and etc...

This fighting with resolutions....I am not even gonna bother getting into that. Except for I dont think very many gamers are in an 800x600 Mode. Especially since Microsoft spiced up the resolution to 1024x768 default. So I think we should try them both out see how they work. and get peoples feedback on either way of which works better etc.

Oh and mano kupoff789x and BlackIce sux. lol

And what was I talking about.....*thinks for a second*oh rigtht........

    Rune/Newer games....

We are a rune community... I can see how pencil sees that template doesnt really reflect the old rune. And the rune that is in us. So we need to just find something that suits rune and the newer games. Bit of a challenge? Probably... But pencil made me think there...

So im not expecting you to follow this post or even read it. Because im just a peregrine but please consider it.

    End of Transmission.

    http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2005/February/res.php

DUDE I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT GAMING RES. I AM TALKING ABOUT THE STANDARDS FOR THE INTERNET AND THE INTERNET AS A WHOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are just trying out things. Don't get your panties in a fuckin knot. Man you teens need to freakin listen for once in awhile. The code Pencil is doing is easily transferable to the new layout. I don't know what his problem is. Its advanced HTML with PHP and MySQL database coding.

Corporate websites are all 800 x 600 at the moment. Until Corporate goes 1024 x 768 the standard will not change. I also said that the general concensus is 1024 x 768 so thats what I would design for. The max for that is 960 pixels in width of viewable content minus already the scrollbar and chrome of the browser.

I have a web template that is scalable to 960 max width but will look perfectly fine on a 1600 x 1200 res like what I use. CSS, XHTML, DHTML, Javascript and PHP integration are all what I am into and I am using them too my full potential.

If you are that anal about res why not make a fully animated, dynamic, scalable, vectorized flash site that will fit to anyones res. YEESH!!!

Ahem. Wow, you twisted my words more than Mano did! Congraturation! I am interested in seeing a different look (strike one) but the idea is really premature (if you're an idiot and can manage to misconstrue that term, too, please quit reading now) and pretty expansive. I wish you would stop trying to sound like you know what you're saying when you haven't worked on it yourself; what Unter did was both nuts and beautiful and is the climax of years of nonstop work so don't expect it to be clean and easily removed and revamped. Don't bullshit yourself and everyone else trying to read through this that the project is absolute cake. If you want to do something useful besides flame me, help Mano with a newsfeed such as what I would like to call a "phpNuke lite" without all the garbage. (I notice this paragraph doesn't conform to typical etiquette and has crappy structure, sorry of it's jumbled)

Crap I forgot about strike two... READ BEFORE POSTING, GUY. I am not "interested" in taking an Advanced HTML course as everything they teach in there is what I know straight off the top of my head. It is not like I'm Socks' age and still have a bunch of years to take any class I want; I can't fit some "advanced HTML" course in there if I already KNOW the course. Exactly like my taking the PC Repair course being introduced next year -- I (and even the instructor already said) would be taking to an easy A. Why the fuck would I want that; I can hit A's in my classes just fine without knowing the subject like the back of my hand which is the exact reason I'm taking C++ and visualBASIC or 3D AutoCAD in my final year. Does this clarify anything? Huh? I would like it too. Totally.

Way to discuss the "in reality" sizes. In reality this current box is 602:378; the LCC site as it is is 1916:1321 on here. We know this, we've been through this, it is common sense. I can bulk up Opera to the max with sidebars and all running at 1280x1024 on the old PC and then we'll see exactly what the fuck we have to conform too. Don't use statistics or hypotheses; you're ignoring a lot of variables here and one involves the browser itself and how much screen size the user chose to take (notice how much screenspace I have... and I browse fine with my email sidebar open at the left 24/7).

I don't have time to waste on another post that you're all going to misconstrue (except Socks but Socks isn't a fucking dick even though people seem to be dicks to him from the get-go). You know, Middie, I got school in the morning. Yeah "us teens" need to go to sleep believe it or not. You overzealous fucks over in Edmonton need to learn how to speak to people regardless of age (oh shit, look, I just generalized an entire group of normal human beings just like you did). I don't know what your problem is but you need to get off of your fuckin' high-horse and quit trying to do subliminal attacks to certain "teenagers" in your posts; understand most of us do lead lives that'll blow your fucking mind. You have no idea who we are so please don't give us any of this crap; even Socks doesn't deserve some sublime "YOU TEENS NEED TO FREAKIN LISTEN" on here, I'm sure he'd be fine without having to read that.

    Friged upagen.

    good idea mano...
    on resolution.
Well we have two choices on resolution, we can
    A) format it it a standard set resolution like mid siad
    or
B)Do it liquid HTML Like I think pencil was talking about.
The main reason we were talking resolutions is because the mockup design I did would be the type to use a standard res.
If modified we could do it liquid as well.
I really don't care what way we go on that.

Now pencil, you keep saying that this is soo hard and we are not going to be able to get it without unter's help etc..
What exactly is the hard part? I don't know a ton aobut this stuff, but I know enough.
I mean what do we have here that makes it so hard? That we couldn't at least semi easily replicate if unter's code is to hard to edit and grasp?

Last thing I'm saying is that it's incredibly ironic that that is the same exact thing I am saying to you. Every last word (except "might enjoy that"). (Somehow I didn't stress enough your disgusting ego and the fact that I don't need any of your biased, stereotypical "fag talk bullshit"). I thought we were allowed to say whatever we want, when we want around here. Looks like just anything and everything is going to be censored here now; what a shame that the only place I thought I could have an opinion at has fallen once again (not the first time opinion has been shunned here). Next thing you know, Midnite will start editing everyone's posts like he did to that one PowerOfMagic guy, I believe.

Huh? Never said "it is soo hard and we are not going to be able to do it without unter's help" or anything. All I say is that there is a lot to it. We don't know where the hell a lot of things are (which is why we can't edit the stats or forum pages). We'd obviously need Unter's help to find out where the forum and stats pages are stored because they're not on lowcaliber.com ... or at least on the portion of lowcaliber.com that Mano has access to. Someone would need to contact him to get this information and those passwords or whatever, right? Keeps seeming like you keep doubting me... but seriously how else are you going to get to those pages to find out their formats and whatnot? It isn't that hard to grasp and a lot of the work he did will be "stolen", (i.e. copy and pasted) but it might not fit and will require much work to fix up and you might hit a roadblock or two. You make it seem like I said you'll never do it no matter how hard you try. Of course you will but you have to see the structure yourself and then make your own opinions, this is just how I felt when I first had to work with it.

I don't want to discuss it because I'll get flamed again because I am the only person around here that has to be 100% descriptive and perfect on here to get a point across now.

I'll just say that the most popular pages in the world are really simple: fark.com; slashdot.org; wikipedia.org; etc. This is how I wanted Low Caliber to be... I mean strye.com is the absolute flashiest I'd like it to look. Can't we just change the newsfeed to an easily-updatable one without doing all of this? It would be easier and still "attractive to new users" and keep the old traditional, good format. I just don't understand the idea that we need to have a million flash animations and giant photoshopped, 3D images and phpNuke with 2 chunky sidebars and ads and useless links like other sites just to attract people who play FPS games? You seriously think they won't come here because we mostly play Rune? I'm so sorry but I play every PC game a person could get their hands on and I still am more attracted to the current Low Caliber than any other place. You may also notice that flashy pages are definitely not as functional as this site (main example: fpscentral.com, a site that used to kick ass but is barely navigable now because the flashiness makes it slow and laggy and even hitting the back button makes the entire site refresh just for a fuckin' poll). Function over form, boys... I know this site won't be that flashy (you probably think from this I expect it to be a slow, chunky site) but this place definitely works better than most. Which can you naviage through better, a standard game site (like Doom 3 or Flat Out or Colin McRae series official sites that are made in flash) or this? Eh. Sorry that this is how I feel but its my opinion, don't flame it like I know people want to. I'm sick of repeating myself (not just about this but in many other ways) so I'm not saying it again. Like you guys respect my fucking opinion anymore anyway (don't respond to that, Kz?).

I agree with Pencil on this.
That's why we designed this site/forum to be fast and reliable.
We had some discussions (Unter and I over some chess games about it) but in the end we had to take into consideration even a dial-up connection.
The content it's important, not the facade.

ahaha. I never even read pencil's post.
    Sorry. forgot about this thread.
And yeah I think we will be amiming for something along the lines of strye.com for flashy ness actually.
Yes it is good and simple, but seriously, when is the last time we got any new members? If anything the current design or lack there of is hurting the club more than helping. it is simple and I like it. But for some it might come across as amature or cheap etc.
Looking at the mockup I did, I think that is probly way too flashy and 3d to implement. That was just a starting point to work from. We will refine and simplify and work with it to get it to fast as can be. But I don't think the dialup is much of an issue anymore. Especaill because this is a site geared twoards gamers.
